Tell Time to the Nearest 5 Minutes

Level 4 of 52nd Grade, late 1st Grade

Every large tick mark on a clock face represents a 5-minute interval. By learning to count the 12 positions (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 00) you can read any 5-minute time instantly. This is the most important milestone before reading exact times.

Skills You Will Practice

  • Counting the 12 large tick marks clockwise
  • Multiplying mark position × 5 to get minutes
  • Reading any 5-minute time confidently
  • Handling "past" and "to" language (e.g., "twenty past four", "ten to seven")

How This Drill Works

Clocks in this drill show times on 5-minute boundaries only (e.g., 2:05, 3:20, 7:45). The minute hand always lands on one of the 12 large markers. Count clockwise from 12, multiplying each mark by 5.
