Clock Reading Speed Drill — 4th Grade

Ages 9–10

Fourth graders should read analog clocks instantly. If there is any hesitation, daily fluency drills close the gap quickly. This drill presents all 720 possible times in random order, measuring your average solve time. A goal of under 3 seconds per clock is excellent at this level.

Teaching Tips & Strategies

  • Track your average solve time across sessions and aim to beat your personal record.
  • If you hesitate on exact-minute times, drop back to the 5-minute drill to rebuild the habit.
  • Relate clock reading to elapsed time and schedule word problems.
  • Try the drill again on a different day to measure improvement.

Curriculum Alignment

  • Fluent reading of analog and digital clocks
  • Elapsed time calculations across hours and minutes
  • Conversion between units of time (minutes, hours, days)
