Telling Time to the Hour and Half-Hour — 1st Grade
Ages 6–7
In 1st grade, students are expected to read analog and digital clocks to the hour and half-hour (CCSS 1.MD.B.3). The key new concept is "half past" — when the minute hand points straight down to 6, meaning 30 minutes have elapsed. Practice both positions until reading them feels instant.
Teaching Tips & Strategies
- →Review on-the-hour times first if not mastered from Kindergarten.
- →Introduce 1:30 as "one thirty" AND "half past one" — both expressions matter.
- →Have students draw hands on blank clock faces before reading them.
- →Connect to real life: "We eat lunch at 12:30" or "School ends at 3:00."
Curriculum Alignment
- • Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks (CCSS 1.MD.B.3)
- • Use language: o'clock and half past
- • Relate time to familiar daily routines
